Program Information

Hamilton Wenham Youth Soccer has programs for children aged pre-K-18. Each program is designed to be age appropriate, following the rules and guidance from our  league (Essex County Youth Soccer Association) and aligning with the principles of our state (Massachusetts Youth Soccer Association)

Please note: Eligibility for each program is based on grade + age. Essex County and Massachusetts Youth Soccer use grade and age as of January 1 of each year to determine eligibility, and Hamilton-Wenham follows the same model to avoid inconsistency. See the Registration Page for age eligibility for each program

We designate this as an Academy Program because we make a concerted effort to teach players AND coaches specific skills, rules and respect for the game. What makes this program particularly effective is the involvement of a third party to provide the curriculum and lead practices, working with both the players and coaches. Travel (Grade 3 – Grade 12)

About the Program:Hamilton-Wenham is a member of Essex County Youth Soccer Association (ECYSA) and our Travel program incorporates interleague play with other towns associated with ECYSA. Competition becomes more of a focus at the U12 level and above.
Equipment & Uniforms:Travel players (U10 through U14) are required to wear the town uniform, which consists of a jersey, shorts and socks. Players are responsible to order a town uniform when registering to the Travel program for the first time. Every new player to the Travel program will be issued a number as part of their first uniform order. This number will be associated with that player throughout their tenure in the Travel program. Replacement jerseys and new uniforms will be issued with the same number. The league requires that every player on a team wear a unique number. Our numbering process is necessary to eliminate duplicate numbers within an age group. Many parents hope to pass along a uniform from one child to the next. This is acceptable provided that the jersey number does not conflict with another on a team. If it does, the player with alternate number will be asked to renumber their jersey using tape or iron-on modification.

Click on the link to our Registration & Uniforms Page and follow the instructions there to order a uniform.
Age Groups:U10 Travel Soccer - Typically 3rd and 4th grade players. U10 utilizes a size 4 ball and games are played with 6 players per side. Games consist of two 25 minute halves. The field is relatively small to maximize player touches on the ball. At the U10 level, the league is introducing the concept of competitive play while remaining focused on teaching and learning skills. Official game scores and standings are not kept and "do-overs" are allowed in certain circumstances.

U12 Travel Soccer - Typically 5th and 6th grade players. U12 utilizes a size 4 ball and games are played with 8 players per side. Games consist of two 30 minute halves. The field is larger than a U10 and about half the size of a U14 field. Competition becomes more of a focus at the U12 level.

U 14 Travel Soccer- Typically 7th and 8th grade players. U14 utilizes a size 5 (full size) ball and games are played with 11 players per side. Games consist of two 35 minute halves. The field and goals are full size.

U16/U19 Travel Soccer –- (Offered in Spring Season Only) This is an opportunity for high school players to play soccer in the spring season. Games are played on Sunday afternoons and the team determines the practice schedule, which is often only once each week. U16/U19 players do not wear the town uniform. A jersey that is chosen by the team is provided. U16 and U19 games consist of 40 and 45 minute halves respectively.

Coaching Opportunities and Resources:If you are interested in volunteering to coach your child's team please send an email to the appropriate Age Group Coordinator listed on the Contacts Page.

Indoor/Winter Soccer

There are a variety of indoor soccer programs available for winter training and/or games. These programs are operated by other leagues and not Hamilton-Wenham Youth Soccer. While some of the HWYSA coaches choose to roster teams and participate, HWYSA plays no role in this process. The leagues allow anyone with an interest to form and register a team. Alternatively, some of the leagues allow for individual registration where players are placed on teams. The fee structure varies as does the number of sessions available for play.
